Sarah Ellis, Hearts and Homes; or, Social Distinction

London, London Printing and Publishing Company, c1848. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of a Sarah Ellis's novel regarding the role of women in society. Bound in green cloth with gilt lettering. Complete in three volumes. With a frontispiece to volume one. Sarah Ellis, 1799-1872, was a writer and educationalist. Sarah Ellis "acted as a catalyst for discussion of middle-class women's role in the family and society, and she thus made a significant contribution to the "woman question", particularly in the 1840s and 1850s, when her influence was at its height. In her own terms she was dignifying women by giving them moral work to do within their domestic setting, to balance the active role undertaken by men outside the home, and she was thus redressing to some extent the imbalance of power between middle-class men and women" -ODNB. In green cloth bindings with gilt detail to the spine. Externally smart with bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges strained to all volumes. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and age-toning due to paper used. Ink inscription and institutional ink stamp to title page of all volumes. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
